Two chances instead of one
Ace, jack, ten opposite three small. Both the king and the queen are missing, and a single finesse would win half the time. Here you can take two — lead small towards the jack, and if it loses, lead small towards the ten later.
You are not playing for one card to be onside. You are playing for West to hold either of two, which is a much better bet.
