The ace before the finesse
Ace, queen and three small opposite four small. The king is missing and you need four tricks, so you can afford one loser.
Leading low to the queen straight away is the obvious play, and it isn't wrong by much. But there is a layout where it loses two tricks and the alternative loses only one, and guarding against it costs nothing.
